  1. Minoxidil: It is a lotion available over-the-counter(non prescription) and has to be applied on daily basis. Androgenetic Alopecia, that causes hairfall, is treated by minoxidil. It results in covering the bald spots and hair regrowth is experienced. It might take 3-4 months for new hair to grow. Growth of new hair stops soon after the medication is discontinued. In many cases, hair regrowth is not seen but loss of hair stops. A little scalp irritation maybe experienced as a side effect.
  2. Finasteride: This drug stops the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that shrinks the hair follicles. It is taken in the form of pill. It restores the size of the hair, which are rendered very thin by the disease. Hair regrowth is seen after several months though rate of hair loss is slowed down in few weeks. Side effects of Finasteride can be loss of libido in a rare case. This drug is not approved for women.
  3. Corticosteroids : This drug is taken in the form of injections or pills. It solves the problem of hair loss by treating Alopecia areata.

There are many people who don't want to go for these expensive treatments. The fear of any unknown side effect also keeps them away from such drugs. In such cases, there are many homemade remedies available. These are very natural remedies and apart from preventing further hair loss, they can also result in nourishing the hair.

Dandruff has been a cause for hair fall in number of cases. So apart from using the anti dandruff shampoos, massaging the scalp with hot oil can do wonders to scalp as it stimulates the blood flow and hair follicles. Using the herbal products like amla, powder of neem leaves and eggs is also one of the most recommended solutions. Avoiding shampoos that use harmful chemicals is a nice way to stop inviting the hair fall trouble.

Stress and unhealthy diet are also some reasons for hair loss. Stress leads to the production of hormones and other harmful chemicals in the body that results in hair fall. It is recommended to manage stress and live a less-stressful life. A healthy and nutritional diet is also extremely important. Low fat food should be preferred and fruits should be consumed as they have a very positive effect on skin. Both of these factors have a direct bearing on the rate of hair loss.
